Restricting When Editing Is Available

Decide which orders can be edited based on sales channel, location, tags, and product conditions.

Not every order should be editable. Orders from a marketplace that owns the customer relationship, wholesale orders covered by a contract, or line items that are part of a promotion all need to be excluded. The Editing Restrictions section is where you set those exclusions.

Edit restriction configuration

To open it, click Manage on the Editing restrictions card. You'll see five independent settings — use any combination that fits your store.

Restricted sales channels

Choose sales channels whose orders cannot be edited at all. Common picks:

  • TikTok, Meta and other marketplaces

  • Point of Sale (in-store purchases)

  • Any draft-order based channel you don't want customers touching

When an order comes in from a restricted channel, the Edit your order block is hidden completely on the Thank You page, and on the Order Status page it shows "This order cannot be edited." instead of the edit options.

Restricted locations

Pick specific fulfillment locations whose orders are excluded from editing. Useful for:

  • 3PL or third-party warehouses on tight SLAs where any change is billable

  • Retail store pickup where the order is prepared instantly

  • Regional hubs that don't have the staff to handle edits

Orders assigned to any of the selected locations are skipped by Order Editing.

Restricted order tags

Sometimes a restriction isn't about where the order comes from — it's about what kind of order it is. Use order tags to mark orders you've already decided shouldn't be editable.

Typical tags:

  • wholesale

  • subscription

  • no-edit

  • gift-order

  • prepaid

Any order carrying one of these tags is skipped, regardless of sales channel or location.

Note: The tags are matched exactly. Make sure the same tag is applied consistently by whatever system adds it (Shopify Flow, your ERP, or manually by staff).

Restricted product tags

This restriction works per line item instead of per order. Instead of blocking the whole order, it locks just the individual items that carry a restricted tag — everything else on the order stays editable.

Good candidates:

  • bundle-child — items that are part of a bundle and shouldn't be edited alone

  • final-sale

  • gwp — gift-with-purchase items

  • custom-made — personalized items already in production

Customers see a small "cannot edit" indicator on the locked items, and can still change anything else.

Disallow editing free items

Turn this on to lock any line item with a zero-dollar price after discounts. This is the simple way to protect:

  • Free gifts

  • Buy-one-get-one free items

  • Promotional giveaways bundled at $0

When off, free items are editable like any other line. When on, they're locked the same way as items with a restricted product tag.

What customers see when an order or item is restricted

  • Order-level restriction (channel, location, or order tag):

  • On the Thank You page — the Edit your order block is hidden completely. The page looks the same as it would for a store without Order Editing.

  • On the Order Status page — the block stays in place but shows a single line: "This order cannot be edited."

  • Item-level restriction (product tag or free item): the customer sees the full edit UI as normal, but the matching lines display a locked indicator and can't be changed. Everything else on the order remains editable.
