Placing Orders on Hold During the Edit Window

Keep orders out of fulfillment while customers might still edit, and optionally tag them for easy tracking.

While the edit window is open, a customer could still change the address, add items, or cancel outright. The Fulfillment Hold section lets you make sure orders don't get picked, packed, or shipped before that window closes — and optionally tag those orders so your team can see them at a glance.

Fulfillment hold configuration

Hold orders during the edit window

When this is on, every eligible order gets placed on a fulfillment hold in Shopify the moment it comes in, with the reason "Order in edit window".

  • In the Shopify admin, the order shows a fulfillment hold banner — warehouse staff and 3PL integrations will see it and skip the order.

  • The hold is released automatically the instant the edit window closes, either because time ran out or the customer finished editing and the window expired.

  • If the order is fulfilled early for any other reason (you manually push it through, for example), the edit window closes at the same time.

This is on by default, and we recommend leaving it on for most stores. Turn it off only if you have a specific reason to — for example, very fast pick-and-pack operations where a hold would slow you down more than it's worth.

Tag orders during the edit window

When this is on, every eligible order is tagged with om:edit-order-hold while its window is open. The tag is automatically removed when the window closes.

Why you might want this:

  • It makes editable orders easy to find in Shopify filters and smart collections

  • You can build automations or views around the tag (for example, "show me all orders currently being edited")

  • It's a clear visual cue for support staff looking at the order timeline

This is off by default — turn it on if your team already uses tags for internal workflow, or if you want a quick filter in Shopify for edit-in-progress orders.

Note: This tag is managed automatically. You don't need to add or remove it yourself; the app handles both.

Turning either off

Uncheck the toggle and click Save at the top of the page. Future orders will no longer be placed on hold or tagged. Orders that are currently in their edit window will keep whatever hold and tag they were created with — they're cleaned up normally when their window closes.
